Introduction
The IC Knowledge - MEMS Cost Model is designed to enable users to easily estimate manufacturing costs for most MEMS devices. The cost model runs inside of Excel, the user makes selections from dropdown menus on 3 worksheets covering process and fab configuration. The user must make 6 selections covering process, fab age, country where the fab is located, wafer yield, die size and die yield. There are 5 optional selections that cover fab capacity, utilization, depreciation rate, substrate type and override wafer cost that may be left as defaults or over-ridden. The 0700 revision adds the ability to overide equipment costs and throughput on an individual equipment basis. Outputs include a breakout of fab operating costs and wafer costs as well as cost to build a suitable wafer fab.

Revision history
- The following is the revision history for the MEMS Cost Model:
- Revision 0400 - Initial release
- Revision 0401 - added red warning messages. Added Epi, Quartz, Pyrex, Ultrasonic drilled and Etched Glass substrates. Added Sandia SUMMiT process and RF relay process. Added ability to override wafer cost to enter wafer costs for die cost calculations. Added calculated die yields with user override.
- Revision 0402 - fixed selection numbering on sheet 3. Fixed a bug with substrate cost erros on user defined processes. Adjusted labor to calculate off of all steps instead of just photo steps. Added Ford accelerometer process.
- Revision 0500 - adjusted DL and IDL rates for 2005. Replaced water, gas and electricity usage algorithms with improved algorithms. Added SUMMiT3 process on 150mm and 200mm wafers. Added thick nitride process.
- Revision 0501 - Removed test sites from the gross die calculation. Added ability to adjust DRIE etch rates.
- Revision 0502 - Added user entered 200mm surface and bulk processes and 200mm Epi wafers.
- Revision 0502a - fixed step entry for 200mm processes.
- Revision 0503 - added the ability to model 300mm processes. Updated equipment costs and footprint. Updated cleanroom construction costs.
- Revision 0600 - fixed a problem with enter steps 300mm displaying step entry disabled. Added the "2 Equipment defaults" page that allows the user to override the equipment costs and throughput calculated by the program. Added IMEPKU process. Updated direct and indirect labor rates to 2006 values. Fixed an error where the number of process steps was not properly filling in for pre-defined processes.
- Revision 0700 - updated labor and electric rates by country. Changed depreciation to default to 5 year straight line regardless of the country. Added Mexico to the available country selections. Updated starting wafer costs.
- Revision 0701 - added the ability to adjust OEE. Added the ability for users to enter material costs directly.
- Revision 0702 - added lift-off and special work stations and split photo into stepper and contact. Updated all flows to take advantage of stepper versus contact, no longer segregate flows based on bulk or surface. Added summary wafer cost pie chart to the output page. Revision 0800 - Updated direct and indirect labors costs, updated electric rates, split out natural gas usage to create a more accurate calculation, updated starting wafer costs. Completely reviewed and updated equipment costs and throughput
- Revision 0800 - Updated direct and indirect labors costs, updated electric rates, split out natural gas usage to create a more accurate calculation, updated starting wafer costs. Completely reviewed and updated equipment costs and throughput.
