Cost per function trends

Introduction
The integrated circuit industry has an incredible record of price reduction. Figure 1 illustrates the cost per Million Instructions Per Second (MIPS) for Intel Microprocessors, and the cost per one million bits (megabit) of DRAM memory trends since 1970. The costs have come down by six orders of magnitude in three decades and are forecast to come down two more orders of magnitude this decade!
